Scaled Boolean Algebras
Scaled Boolean algebras are a category of mathematical objects that arose
from attempts to understand why the conventional rules of probability should
hold when probabilities are construed, not as frequencies or proportions or the
like, but rather as degrees of belief in uncertain propositions. This paper
separates the study of these objects from that not-entirely-mathematical
problem that motivated them. That motivating problem is explicated in the first
section, and the application of scaled Boolean algebras to it is explained in
the last section. The intermediate sections deal only with the mathematics. It
is hoped that this isolation of the mathematics from the motivating problem
makes the mathematics clearer.Comment: 53 pages, 8 Postscript figures, Uses ajour.sty from Academic Press,

Effects of ordinary and superconducting cosmic strings on primordial nucleosynthesis
A precise calculation is done of the primordial nucleosynthesis constraint on the energy per length of ordinary and superconducting cosmic strings. A general formula is provided for the constraint on the string tension for ordinary strings. Using the current values for the various parameters that describe the evolution of loops, the constraint for ordinary strings is G mu less than 2.2 x 10 to the minus 5 power. Our constraint is weaker than previously quoted limits by a factor of approximately 5. For superconducting loops, with currents generated by primordial magnetic fields, the constraint can be less or more stringent than this limit, depending on the strength of the magnetic field. It is also found in this case that there is a negligible amount of entropy production if the electromagnetic radiation from strings thermalizes with the radiation background
Towards Quantifying Non-Local Information Transfer: Finite-Bit Non-Locality
The advent of Bell's inequalities provoked the possibility that entangled
quantum phenomena is non-local in nature. Since teleportation only requires a
finite amount of classical information, i.e. two bits, the author asks whether
or not it is possible to further characterize the nature of internal
correlation in terms of information. Towards this end, the issue of the amount
of information that is transferred internally and non-locally is addressed.
There are two possibilities: the amount is infinite or the amount is finite. A
partial answer to this problem is given: it is shown that models exist whereby
the amount is finite. The EPR-Bell cosine correlation can be reproduced exactly
using on average 1.48 bits. The issue of simultaneity and the problems it poses
are also examined in this context. Several extensions are suggested.Comment: New version: minor changes. Presented at the Physics of Quantum

Cape Fear Confederates: The 18th North Carolina Regiment in the Civil War

Considering the number of regiments North Carolina supplied to the Confederate army, there are surprisingly few modern regimental histories of their service. There were more than seventy regiments, but there are currently only about ten full-l...
“Please consult your pharmacist” A linguistic analysis of patient information leaflets
This dissertation is a linguistic analysis of various patient information leaflets concerning both the rhetorical organisation from a move-based approach and the lexical choices, regarding verb processes, verb tenses and personal pronouns. A quantitative analysis was carried out using corpus software AntConc in order to analyse said lexical choices, alongside a manual analysis in order to extract said rhetoric organisation. Although there have been studies on patient information leaflets, few analyse the aspects included within this dissertation. The results of this analysis confirm the effectiveness of these patient information leaflets in providing clear and concise information to patients.
